Archaeology Presentation In Stuart

Jerald T. Milanich will present the Belle Glade archaeological civilization of South Florida dating from 1000 B.C. to A.D. 1700 at 11 a.m. Jan. 14 at the Morgade Library in Stuart.
In 1513, much of the South Florida core was home to the Belle Glade ethnicity, a name given to the display of archaeological sites that mark the old beach of Lake Okeechobee and the neighboring wet savannah. The significant earthworks and the Belle Glade culture have remained about wholly unfamiliar except to archaeologists.
In his illustrated lecture, Milanich will focus on the Fort Center site, the composite Belle Glade earthworks and the people who built them. Milanich is contributing editor for Archaeology magazine and professor emeritus, University of Florida. He is the author of a number of books on the native peoples of Florida.
The Morgade library is at 5851 S.E. Community Drive on the Chastain Campus of Indian River State College.
