The South Suburban Archaeological Society will host a free slide lecture program at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Irwin Community Center, 18120 S. Highland Ave., Homewood.
Roger J. Barski, founder and director of the Nautical Archaeology Group, Great Lakes Region, will give a lecture titled "The Development and Use of Remote Sensing Techniques for Underwater Archaeology Surveys."
Barski will discuss how marine archaeologists and underwater explorers use specialized remote sensing equipment and techniques that allow them to penetrate the darkness and depths of the water to search for and map submerged sites, especially shipwrecks.
Barski also will discuss and show slides of his work.
The program is made possible in part by the MacArthur Fund for Arts and Culture at the Richard H. Driehouse Foundation.
