Early Dynastic Period 3100BC to the end of the Ptolemaic Period 30BC. Egypt was ruled by all-powerful kings or pharaohs who were considered to have divine status.
The 3rd century historian, Manetho,grouped them into 31 dynasties. Egyptologists have grouped them into three kingdoms - old, middle and new-each headed by a great king who unified the country.
